There are many banks that have no fee checking with a small minimum balance or even without a minimum balance. Capital One doesn’t have fees. Dime Bank has a $1500 minimum balance for free checking and no minimum balance for those 50 and over. Chase has free checking if you maintain a daily balance of $1500 or more.

I opened this free checking account in Aug. 2010 and have had very few problems with it. I would estimate maybe 3 overdraws total in the past 4 years, and I always brought the account into the black within a day or two of the overdraw.

I am assuming, if you have to cancel your checking acct, which you might also use to pay your rent/mortgage, car note, student loans, and is the direct deposit target for your payroll check... that represents a lot of chaos. If you had pointed your Gym at your credit card, it makes it much much simpler/less collateral damage to contain the dispute.
