Under 7 South African Infantry Division. Regiment Oranjerivier became the armoured car regiment of 71 Motorised Brigade (part of 7 South African Infantry Division) on 15 November 1974. A year later the headquarters of the regiment was moved to Cape Town.
After the establishment of the Republic of South Africa on 31 May 1961, the unit was again renamed Pretoria Regiment by the South African Defence Force. [ 1] In the 1960s, recruits were trained on Centurion tanks and the new Eland armoured cars. [ 2] The regiment assisted in the development of the Olifant MBT.
From 1990, the unit deployed internally in South Africa. Its main tasks at this time included counter insurgency in urban and rural areas. [ 9 ] In late 2019 the unit was reportedly deployed in a number of communities in Cape Town to combat gang violence [ 10 ] by supporting police operations.
