The company is one of the largest American-owned private employers in the United States. The corporation was founded in Minneapolis by businessman George Dayton in 1902, and developed through the years via expansion and acquisitions. Target, the company's first discount store and eventual namesake, was opened in 1962.
By the end of the decade though, additional space for expansion was needed, so a 30-acre (120,000 m 2) site on the outskirts of Chattanooga was purchased. On this site in 1964, Brock added a 64,000-square-foot (5,900 m 2 ) distribution center, expanding the warehouse another 25,000 square feet (2,300 m 2 ) by the end of the 1960s.
Five years later in 2007, the company acquired Buy Buy Baby, a chain of baby supply stores founded by Feinstein's sons, and began international expansion, opening their first Canadian store in Richmond Hill, Ontario. By 2011, Bed Bath & Beyond had 1,142 stores. In 2012, the company acquired Cost Plus World Market for $495 million.
