Cal States are significantly cheaper, and CPP is amongst the more reputable Cal States. If money is an issue and financial aid won't cover the cost of a UC, you can't go wrong with CPP. Our family is making a similar decision - looking at CPP vs CSUF vs ASU for CS.
My experience with new grads from Cal and UCLA vs. Cal Poly Pomona is that with the same direction and training provided over a few months, those from Cal and UCLA generally tend to ramp up faster than and surpass Cal Poly Pomona grads - this likely due to Cal and UCLA grads already being used to a higher level of detail being needed, as well ...
But in all, CPP's architecture program (both undergraduate and graduate) is one of the best there is in California. As long as you have the passion and drive, you will definitely grow. Manage your time, work hard, show up to studio, and you'll be just fine. EDIT: Spelling Errors.

No school is perfect, but CPP is absolutely a good choice for engineering. This is in particular true due to the hands-on focus. Definitely not a party school. I can't speak to the other schools, but the UCSC mascot is a banana slug so that might be worth something (as seen in Pulp Fiction). 1.
