The station would briefly become KMSO-TV in 1957 but would revert to KGVO-TV in 1964 and would use the call letters until 1978 when the station became the current NBC affiliate KECI-TV. Missoula's second station, KPAX-TV , began as a satellite station from Butte in 1970 before becoming a full-fledged broadcaster in 1977.

Joe Sample purchased KXLF radio and television in 1960; the station switched primary network affiliations to CBS, and in 1969, it was one of the original three stations in MTN. In 1970, KXLF-TV spawned KPAX-TV in Missoula, which originally was a full-time satellite station but began producing local programming in 1977.
The station went on the air on November 16, 1990. This made Missoula one of the last cities in the nation to get full service from all three major networks. Previously, ABC had been relegated to limited clearances on NBC affiliate KECI-TV (channel 13) and CBS affiliate KPAX-TV (channel 8).
