Gauteng is the wealthiest province in South Africa and is considered the financial hub of South Africa; the financial activity is mostly concentrated in Johannesburg. It also contains the administrative capital, Pretoria, and other large areas such as Midrand, Vanderbijlpark, Ekurhuleni and the affluent Sandton.
This is a list of cities and towns in Gauteng Province, South Africa. Most towns are no longer separate municipalities, their local governments having been merged into larger structures . In the case of settlements that have had their official names changed the traditional name is listed first followed by the new name.
Map of the municipalities in Gauteng. Gauteng province of South Africa is divided, for local government purposes, into three metropolitan municipalities and two district municipalities. The district municipalities are in turn divided into six local municipalities.
On a map, the southern suburbs appear to hang down from the border of Soweto and Johannesburg South. It is about 40 kilometres south of the inner city. It is actually the most isolated, least integrated area of Johannesburg, with its east, west, and southern boundaries also forming Johannesburg proper's boundaries in the area.
