  2. 1. If you can't find the requirements on Microsoft website, you can use this snapshot from Archive.org taken on 03 October 2003. It leads to a page with the title: "Windows XP Home Edition System Requirements" published on 24 August 2001 (the date Windows XP was relased to manufacturer). You can then use the same website to move in time to ...

  3. The default Windows XP installation requires approximately 1300MB (ex. drivers, pagefile and hiberfil). Of course, that can be reduced significantly with utilities such as nLite (better results but unforgiving, you don't get it right it's back to the drawing board) or XPLite (you can restore removed components with a few mouse clicks).

The installation was brand new, no viruses, no polluted registry, no other problem. The antivirus took under 20 MB. According to Microsoft, the system requirements are P233 (P300 recommended) and 64 MB with 128 MB recommended. So are they just lying or what is to blame?

  5. Windows 95/98 can run on at least 8 MB of RAM. Windows 2000/ME need over 100 MB. Windows XP needs over 400 MB for efficiently; possibly can run under it though. Windows Vista/7 need over 600 MB. Windows 8 needs pretty much 1 GB itself, no questions asked. Non-Windows: OS X Snow Leopard/Mavericks/Mountain Lion demand over 800 MB of RAM.

  6. In fact the last time I had to touch Windows XP was preparing for labs of an archaeological course where we're taught about 8086 assembly (Intel Microprocessors), and I just applied a random solution that I found online to activate the Windows XP in my virtual machine. In fact Windows XP uses offline activation, and its verification algorithm ...

  7. 32 bit Windows XP has two well-known memory limits. Each process is limited to 2GB of memory (or 3GB if you change a setting). The maximum memory that Windows XP will use in total is 3.25GB. There is no fundamental 4GB limit for memory in 32 bit operating systems - Windows Server 2003 can use more than 4GB. The key limit that defines a 32-bit ...

    1. 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor. 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit). 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit). I think the min. RAM for Windows XP grew with SP3. But nevertheless you should understand these requirements just like the "maximum battery lifetime" of notebooks ...

  10. It's obvious that 64-bit is where computing is now. I'd rather replace a component that doesn't have 32 bit drivers than use a 32-bit OS just for that piece of hardware. On the application side of things, through Windows on Windows (WOW), there should be no issues with 99.999% of 32-bit applications running on 64-bit Windows.

  11. One of the biggest reasons to go with Windows 2008 Server is driver support. 3rd-party 64-bit drivers on XP are not very good and not getting better. Another added benefit as a web developer, is the ability to use IIS7 as your development server. The web server in XP only supports one web root. This can be a pain when developing for web apps ...
