There's a "manual" process too, if you don't want to use a 3rd party modded Minecraft manager. You need to use one of the mod loaders for mods to work with Minecraft, either Forge or Fabric, depending on the mods you're wanting to play with. Just loading a mod on it's own won't do anything as Minecraft won't know it is there.
