Open: Sept 25, 2024–Feb 9, 2025. Edges of Ailey, opening at the Whitney Museum of American Art on September 25, is the first large-scale museum exhibition to celebrate the life, dances, influences, and enduring legacy of visionary artist and choreographer Alvin Ailey (b. 1931, Rogers, Texas; d. 1989, New York, New York).
The Whitney Museum of American Art was founded in 1930, and opened in 1931 on West Eighth Street near Fifth Avenue. Following a move in 1954 to an expanded site on West 54th Street, the Whitney opened the Marcel Breuer-designed building on Madison Avenue at 75th Street in 1963.
Admission to the Whitney is now free all day on the second Sunday of every month. Visitors of all ages will enjoy artmaking, activities, tours, classes, and other special events. Though admission is free, tickets are required and capacity is limited.
