The township of Covington was formed in January 1818 from the township of Wilkes-Barre, and embraced at that time the whole of Henry Drinker’s possessions in the south part of old Luzerne county. Covington was once part of the vast stretch of beech trees, extending eastward from the Scranton/Dunmore area, known as Drinker’s Beeches.
