Mick Ralphs, the original guitarist and a key songwriter for Bad Company, joined the band at its formation in 1973 and was a consistent member until 1982. He returned to the fold from 1986 to 1998 and again from 2008 to 2016.

They recorded their first album at Headley Grange, the mansion where Zeppelin recorded many of their tracks. They also shared a manager with Led Zeppelin: Peter Grant. According to Kirke and most sources, they got their name from a 1972 Western called Bad Company starring Jeff Bridges.
