We recently moved from Edgewater Glen to Bucktown, and have been trying many restaurants in the new hood. While we had previously been to solid options like Antico and The Bristol, we were pleasantly surprised to come across a place I had never previously heard of: The StopAlong, which is on Milwaukee, right where the 606 passes
Small Cheval will serve burgers, fries, and milkshakes for al fresco and to-go dining. Small Cheval’s exterior improvements for outdoor dining have been approved by the Village and they are working with the Village’s Historic Preservation and Appearance Review Commissions to ensure signage is appropriate for this important local landmark.
I've had three meals at Maude's Liquor Bar in the past month and a half and the food is absolutely stellar, still. The pretension/indifference in service mirrors that of Au Cheval. The steak tartare, frites, and the shrimp cocktail, are, however still absolutely some of the very best available in Chicago.
And no offense meant; I'm a sucker for these themes. I really like all the amped-up "diner" stuff at Au Cheval, for example, despite the conceit it involves. Wondering whether this will be closer to the inspiration (like Big & Little, and less so Big Star) or polished to a high and expensive sheen (more likely). Who knows.
Once again, as rabid shoppers elbowed each other in search of early holiday-season deals, my family and I hopped in the family truckster and ate our way across town . . .
The salmon stood proudly front and center in this tartare, accented beautifully by herbs and creme fraiche. And the wedge salad will remind you why this salad was created in the first place. If you've dined at Au Cheval, you probably had a pretty good idea of the thick, rich bacon that adorns this wedge.
I've not been to Au Cheval, but I had heard those that have been compare LBW to that, and possibly even better. I for one LOVE their burgers. I think the smash burger double and triple up with all that grease just makes the umami amazing. I like Kuma's, but for plain burgers LBW is my go to.
