The symptoms of spinal tumors are often non-specific, resulting in a delay in diagnosis. Spinal nerve compression and weakening of the vertebral structure cause the symptoms. Pain is the most common symptom at presentation.
A central nervous system tumor (CNS tumor) is an abnormal growth of cells from the tissues of the brain or spinal cord. [1] CNS tumor is a generic term encompassing over 120 distinct tumor types. [2] Common symptoms of CNS tumors include vomiting, headache, changes in vision, nausea, and seizures. [3]
Meningioma. Meningioma, also known as meningeal tumor, is typically a slow-growing tumor that forms from the meninges, the membranous layers surrounding the brain and spinal cord. [1] Symptoms depend on the location and occur as a result of the tumor pressing on nearby tissue. [3] [6] Many cases never produce symptoms. [2]
A glioma is a type of primary tumor that starts in the glial cells of the brain or spinal cord. They are cancerous but some are extremely slow to develop. [2] [3] Gliomas comprise about 30 percent of all brain tumors and central nervous system tumours, and 80 percent of all malignant brain tumours.
Ganglioneuroma. Ganglioneuroma (occasionally called a " ganglioma ") is a rare and benign tumor of the autonomic nerve fibers arising from neural crest sympathogonia ( undifferentiated cells of the sympathetic nervous system ). [1] However, ganglioneuromas themselves are fully differentiated neuronal tumors that do not contain immature elements.
A malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor ( MPNST) is a form of cancer of the connective tissue surrounding peripheral nerves. Given its origin and behavior it is classified as a sarcoma. About half the cases are diagnosed in people with neurofibromatosis; the lifetime risk for an MPNST in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 is 8–13%. [2]
