sigh, I don't know why there's this fascination in trying to combine the two shows.. you can get the backstory from 2003, watch Brotherhood, then resume 2003 without forgetting any major plot points relevant to FMA 2003's conclusion.
Additionally while there is no official order and any order is fine, I would very strongly recommend you watch the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist first, both shows are absolute masterpieces, but I feel it’s a lot easier to appreciate both versions if you start with 2003, in fact I think starting with 2003 and then watching Brotherhood enhances both ...
tl;dr: Watch original FMA, make a break for a week or so and then watch FMA:B As it was already said FMA:B is full manga adaptation and is considered better than FMA. When FMA only follows manga in the beginning and rest of the story is anime original.
This is my reply to those asking as to which to start off with: If you intend to watch both shows, as someone who had watched Brotherhood and then '03, absolutely watch '03 first (take my advice and skip episodes 4 & 10 of '03, as they're filler that arguably take more than they give (but go back and watch if you'd like))!

Start with Fullmetal Alchemist (2003), you only "need" to watch episodes 1-25. for this first half, the series stayed close to the manga. While not all episodes are super important. (Ep. 4 for example is complete filler, in my opinion), the episodes give a good feel for the series and explain a few things they kind of rush over in FMAB.
