Open the launcher and go to "Installations". click on the 3 dots "..." and go to "Edit" from here click "Show more". Go to JVM arguments and remove everything but keep "-Xmx15G" (or however many G you've currently got. For some reason this works for me so i'm happy now.

Potentially any mod because Optifine is a closed source, highly invasive, non-Forge mod which hacks the entire rendering system that almost all mods use, and Optifine could break anything with any update. If you encounter problems, your chain of debugging should be: Remove Optifine to see if it is related.
The process: Download Optifine. "Run" the optifine installer by double clicking the .jar file. Click your way through the installation. Run the Mojang Minecraft launcher. Optifine 1.16.5 crashing. When I try to launch Minecraft with Optifine 1.16.5, and use a shader, it crashes and I get exit code 0. It also tells me that core dump isn't enabled. I've tried everything out there except this, so I hope you guys can help. 3 comments.
All the other mods in that folder work perfectly fine, but optifine won't show up. I have also installed the recommended version of Forge (36.1.0) for 1.16.5. I have gone to settings and allowed made sure that my computer wasn't stopping it from running because it was from an "unknown developer". It wasn't stopping it.

Remove Optifine and Starlight and add Halogen (Also called Sodium Reforged) unless you want shaders or Optifine resource packs and your PC can handle them, but keep in mind that OptiFine is garbage at making the game smoother on the latest versions and causes incompatibility with other mods. Also add LazyDFU, Clumps, FastWorkbench, FastFurnace ...
Yes, sodium gives drastically better performance, but then you'll miss out on optifine only features, e.g connected textures, better texture packs, shaders, antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, forge etc. I get way better FPS with Sodium. Optifine has a bunch of unnecessary features, in my opinion.
