After making a phone call today (described in #1 below), I thought I would start a thread that might serve as bits of advice for others. 1. When you start taking 401K distributions, the "initiation date" is NOT the same as the payout date; the pay-out date is two or three business days later.
How many people in this forum are living on Social Security only and, if so, how do you cope with inflation?
The thing is, you can't have both low COLA and lots of services paid for via taxes. The 400K house that the average family lives in a lower cost area would skyrocket up to 900K with the property tax hikes to go along with it if a bunch of extra services were suddenly added.
Do you want an active retirement community or not. I would look at a few of the big retirement communities in the areas you pick. See what they offer and the services surrounding them. The goal is for you to make up a list of factors that are important to you.
I've noticed those working from home in this forum, which usually means sitting at a desk with a computer, are almost always the ones who dislike the idea of retirement, want to work well past the average retirement age, or get bored rather easily even at the thought of retiring.
