Mazapil is Zacatecas's largest and Mexico's twelfth largest municipality, [6] covering an area of 12,143.256 square kilometres (4,688.537 sq mi) [3] and comprising 16.1% of the state's area. [ 4 ] Mazapil is situated in the Chihuahuan Desert and has an elevation range between 1,300 and 3,200 metres (4,300–10,500 ft). [ 7 ]
Demographics. Mazapil is one of the 175 localities in Mazapil Municipality, [1] and it is the only one that is classified as urban. Located in the northeast corner of the municipality, it recorded a population of 1,262 in the 2020 census, [5] up from 794 inhabitants in the 2010 Census. [6]

Villa de Cos is one of the 58 municipalities of the Mexican state of Zacatecas.It is located in the center-east of the state, bordered by the municipalities of Mazapil, Francisco R. Murguia, Río Grande, Felipe Pescador, Fresnillo, Panuco and Guadalupe in Zacatecas as well as Santo Domingo and Villa de Ramos in the neighboring state of San Luis Potosí.
On the keys of the arches, there are Marian symbols, figures of saints, evangelist, clergy and objects of passion. The cathedral contains an altar designed by artist Javier Marín from Michoacan, which is gilded in 24-carat gold. It is 17 feet high and ten wide and covered with 25 kg (55 lb) of gold from Mazapil.

After the independence of Mexico, Nieves was one of the original partidos named in Zacatecas's state constitution first enacted on 17 January 1825. It became a free municipality on 19 August 1916. In 1964, the municipality was renamed in honour of General Francisco Murguía , who was born in Mazapil and fought in the Mexican Revolution. [6] [10]
