It was formed on 1 January 2005, by merger of the University of the North and the Medical University of South Africa (MEDUNSA). [2] These previous institutions formed the Turfloop and MEDUNSA campuses of the university, respectively. In 2015 the MEDUNSA campus split and became the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. [3]
Sefako Makgatho. Sefako Mapogo Makgatho (1861 - 23 May 1951) was born at GaMphahlele, in the Pietersburg district in the South African Republic (now Limpopo ). [1] He was the son of Chief Kgorutlhe Josiah Makgatho of the Makgatho chieftaincy at GaMphahlele. Before embarking on a political career, Makgato was a teacher and a journalist.
