I have a Craftsman 917.273022, 20hp, 46” w/electric clutch. Problem: Mower worked just fine a couple of weeks ago. Today the mower will start right up; however, when I let up on the break, the engine dies as if the key is turned off. Also, if I lower the deck and pull the electric clutch switch, the mower dies.

Pull the belt off and check the pulleys that tension the belt when the clutch /brake pedal is released. Good chance the holes will be flogged out or there will be debris in there preventing full travel.

When I tried driving it after the wheel was installed, it would not engage the gear. I am able to push it freely when it is off or on.
