In terms of navigation there are a few minor differences between the Jepp and Garmin databases for the America's. Two I have found are: ILS or LOC approaches. Garmin separates them into separate ILS and LOC approaches. The Jepp database contains only the ILS version. Only practical difference is if the GS is out.

In the past with Garmin ‘portables’ I got a code to do an initial update. With a panel mount GPS that free update doesn’t seem to be a thing. The current database is dated Dec 2019. In my experience, the 660 takes 45 minutes or more. The navigation charts IIRC takes like 40 of those minutes. The safe taxi, airport data, etc are pretty quick.

He has been told that VFR gps's do not have to be updated, but if they are updated, you must log it. If not updated, it must have a placard. The FAA quotes 43.9 (I believe that is the correct reg in the letter).

Jan 20, 2013. #2. It is important to note that this change only applies to GPSs that can be updated with a plug-in cable or a removable media card. For example, there are some GPS units where you have to slide out the GPS from the tray and pull/change the cartridge from the back of the unit. This is not included in the new rule and still must ...
