Macy's and Dillard's are middle-end. JCPenney, Sears, and Kohls are lower-middle end. Target, Kmart, and Walmart, if considering a traditional department store, are low-end. The hiearchy from high-end to low-end correlates with the number of locations each brand of store has.

Target, Kmart, and Walmart, if considering a traditional department store, are low-end. The hiearchy from high-end to low-end correlates with the number of locations each brand of store has. Macy's confuses a lot of folks because the brand name has historical prestige and well, a lot of history.

or other luxury department stores such as Nordstrom? If no why? Express stores are in Des Moines or Davenport so it should not be due to a lack of people. And most people can afford to buy especially during sales, Macy's does that all the time during holiday seasons.

All of those stores focus on middle income consumers, but Macy's in-house lines are generally higher end than JCP and Kohls. And they carry higher end designers. I am sure their customers cross shop all of those stores, but you won't see a Michael Kors or Brahmin bag in Kohls or JCP. Macy's also has high end flagships, no such thing for JCP and ...

Macy's downtown, later Dillard's, remained in operation (along with Jones downtown) later than most cities' downtown department stores. Macy's Missouri-Kansas was the predecessor to the original Macy's Midwest. Some suburban Kansas City properties were new and some were repurposed, including from the Emery, Bird, Thayer stores IIRC.

Your comment is hilarious to me. No, Dillard's isn't like Sears at all. Dillards is pretty much a low end department store - probably a notch down from Macy's, but a bit better than Kohl's. I don't think that Dillard's sells tools or appliances or anything like that - mostly clothes and personal items - makeup, fragrances, bed and bath, etc.

I never was much of a department store shopper -- EXCEPT for business suits, which were Jones New York from Dress Barn or Macy's, and dress pants from Kohls (I needed dress pants with belt loops and that was the only place I found them.)
