  2. Garmin database advice? Garmin vs Jeppesen? 430W and 496

In terms of navigation there are a few minor differences between the Jepp and Garmin databases for the America's. Two I have found are: ILS or LOC approaches. Garmin separates them into separate ILS and LOC approaches. The Jepp database contains only the ILS version. Only practical difference is if the GS is out.

When you install this update, it includes all the previous updates for the G5, GAD 29B, GMC 507, GSA 28, and GMU 11. The update process is very simple and takes about 1 minute per G5. When you do the update in the G5, it automatically updates all the other units listed.

Well, you have two options: 1) Get a FlightStream 510. That allows you to do wireless database updates. My airplane partner and I both use ForeFlight as our primary EFB, so we just share a Garmin Pilot subscription on our respective iPads so that either one of us can do the database updates.

DesertNomad. Oct 23, 2015. #1. I bought my plane a few months ago and it came with a 530W as well as USB readers from both Garmin and Jeppesen. I assume the card is inside the 530W unit and that I need to take it out, put it in the reader and download the database update, then return the card to the 530W and leave it in there.

  8. Garmin updates and basic BT usage. | Pilots of America

The 650 takes a data card, or BT updates via the garmin pilot app. The 255A only accepts USB flash drives. The GI 275 takes BT or USB flash drive. With this being the case, it seems that there is no common method to update my equipment. I do not have the garmin pilot app, or the FS510 but I can get it if needed.

FWIW, I had a nearly brand new Garmin pitch servo failure on a long XC. At the next stop I called the Garmin dealer that installed the GFC 500 AP system and dual G5s. The A&P requested that i download the latest G5 software updates and call him back if that didn’t resolve it. As others have said, it’s really easy to do.

  11. Garmin vs Jeppesen Revisited WHICH ONE IS BEST AND CHEAPEST?

Also I found out Jeppesen does not provide any Terrain or Obstacle data. That to me is the deciding factor. Jeppesen: "AMERICAS" annual package for two units (GNS530W, GNS430) NAV only $720 USD. GARMIN "AMERICAS" annual package (plus Terrain plus Obstacle) $799 USD. So for 80 bucs get the more important obstacle data.
