When the power adapter is unplugged, the battery icon shows the Mac is charging, when it is not. An SMC reset has been done, and the battery condition shows normal.

  8. It doesn't sound like a battery issue to me. If it were, you would still be able to turn the computer on when it was plugged in. I would try resetting the smc. The computer does not have to be on to do this. With the the computer plugged in, just hold down the shift control option power keys at the same time and release.
