Sennheiser HD 700 - same as Sony but open back, bright. Very close to a 5.1 surround sound effect. Large Sound stage. Philips X2 - Bright, quite detailed, big bass, however, not as comfortable as the above two but cheap.

I have to confess, I'm not great when it comes to understanding half the tech with headphones. Open-back, closed-cup. I understand the aesthetics, just not the audio qualities of the two. Wireless vs wired is not an issue either and presume wired would be the best bet, which is fine.
The best headphones for movies are virtual surround sound - that's why none of them specify 5.1/7.1 (except the Sony MDR-HW700 which specifies 9.1, but I understand even that is virtual surround sound). I expect to be able to plug the Beyerdynamic DT990 directly into the headphones socket of the Yamaha receiver. I do not expect to need an amp.
A lot of well reviewed wired home headphones for music listening are also fine for 2.0 channel film viewing (or rather listening). Compared to portable BT ANC headphones you should immediately notice a larger soundstage, which self evidently is good for films (soundstage in the context of headphones, not to be compared with speakers).
Below are some headphones suitable for movies to consider: Audio-Technica ATH-AD700 - Open back full size headphones. Very comfortable fit, light weight (despite size) and soft earpads. Excellent treble clarity, good instrument separation and wide soundstage.
Quick question what headphones would you recommend? I mainly watch TV shows and movies on my iPad during my daily commute and just wanted your advice. I'm looking for good sound quality ideally with noise cancelling or isolation. I will listen to music on my iPhone from time to time. My options so far are: Bose qc15
I would think that might not happen. I've tried a friends Sony XM3 with a movie. They sounded like trash to me, but to an average joe with zero headphone experience they are plenty good enough. I plan on getting the Astro mixamp within the week and so I'm looking for the best headphones for both gaming and watching movies on the PS3/Xbox360. From what I have read, I understand the AD900 are supposed to be very good headphones but could someone please recommend hi end headphones that the mixamp could happily power.
I have a denon amp with Dolby headphone capability and need some decent headphones for watching movies that will best compliment this feature for watching movies late at night . Any advice appreciated.
