The proposed Charlotte location for Whataburger is also a former banking center, I believe a former Sun Trust which was closed after the Truist consolidation with BB&T. The Duncan location is apparently a former Bank of America. Other new freestanding locations will likely be built as they infill the region.

Hopefully the local What-A-Burger and the Texas based Whataburger can peacefully coexist. The same situation may soon come to pass in the Charlotte region, where Whataburger is expanding and already there are local What-A-Burger locations around Concord and Kannapolis. In a facebook post on the Woodruff Rd Whataburger, a diner said the the CEO of WB was planning to open a location at the old O'Charley's on Fairview Rd in Simpsonville. As far as the reviews here and facebook, I could not find one that said "this was the best burger ever and worth fighting traffic to wait 30 minutes for".
