The account was set up as an imap email account. I went into the account settings and noted that the servers were somehow changed to 'yahoo' accounts. When I went into the settings and changed them back to imap.aol.com (incoming/port 993) and smtp.verizon.net (outgoing/port 465), per AOL web suggestions.
I can login to my AOL/Verizon account on the web with a browser with no problem. The inbound/outbound server settings in Outlook are what are specified. And yes, AOL/Verizon uses Yahoo since they own all three. Inbound: Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com. Port - 993.
