The back glass on most aquarium's isn't tempered and they sell thin overflow kits. You didn't mention how you'll deal with evaporation. Without a lid, my 45g losses about 2-4 gallons a week depending on weather. Without a sump, you'll have to do it by hand, gravity or by sensor. All three have their downsides.

Basslets are another type of fish worth considering. Royal Gramma, Blackcap Basslet, Swissguard Basslet, Swales Basslet, or one of the Assessors (Yellow / McNeill / Randall’s) are all worth a look. Pajama Cardinals are also worth a look, from what I’ve heard keeping them in odd numbers would be better.

They can also be mixed. The fire shrimp I kept hung upside down on a rock most of the day, but was always visible. 4. firefish is fine 5. wrasse: I wouldn't get the mystery wrasse. They get a little big for a 50 gallon cube, and they get aggressive. There might be a future problem with your shrimp, as you mentioned.

I originally planned on not getting a tang and just sticking to small fish that get no larger than 5’’ but a tomini only gets about 6’’. I have small pair of clowns, small wrasses, cardinals, hogfish, dottyback.
