Lots of people have mentioned this for the first generation AirPods Pro. Read somewhere that the microphones get clogged or deteriorate over time and that's why the noise cancelling starts degrading. That makes sense in general. However, for my experience, it's like it was sudden.

Checked on my Macbook running Sierra and the same issues, only one airpod will play sound at a time, again more so the L not working than the R. Both devices connected to wifi. In terms of charging all 3: Case, L and R airpods all holding a charge very well, no draining issues to speak of.

Hello, I sold my AirPods Pro on eBay, not thinking I'd need to disconnect them from my account. The buyer says that they show as still being linked with my account. When I look online, it seems like the way you are supposed to resolve this is to use the Find My app and remove them there. However, they do not appear in my Find My app.
My bet is still very much on calibration of some kind--that would explain why it's the AirPod itself, why it only does it in a closed case, why it's only every week, why it's once per AirPod, why it waits 15 seconds after closing the case, and the sound is what you'd want for calibration--a step from low to high frequencies.
