The Nevada City Downtown Historic District is a 16-acre (6.5 ha) historic district in Nevada City within the U.S. state of California. Located in Nevada County, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. It dates from 1917, with examples of Moderne and Italianate architecture. [2] The period of significance is 1856–1917.
The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Company incorporated on April 4, 1874, [2] and was headquartered in Grass Valley, California. After two years of construction, passenger and commercial rail services began in 1876 and continued until 1943. The 22.53 mi (36.26 km) line ran from Colfax, north through Grass Valley to Nevada City.

Exhibits include Engine 5, which appeared in many movies, and various pieces of restored rolling stock.
