San Angelo (/ s æ n ˈ æ n dʒ ə l oʊ / SAN AN-jə-loh [5]) is a city in and the county seat of Tom Green County, Texas, United States. [6] Its location is in the Concho Valley, a region of West Texas between the Permian Basin to the northwest, Chihuahuan Desert to the southwest, Osage Plains to the northeast, and Central Texas to the southeast.
The San Angelo metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is a metropolitan area in West Texas that covers two counties - Tom Green and Irion. As of the 2010 census , the MSA had a population of 111,823, [ 1 ] with a 2014 estimate of 118,182.
It originally comprised an area over 60,000 sq mi (160,000 km 2). The original county seat was the town of Ben Ficklin. In 1882, flood waters of the Concho River destroyed the town and drowned 65 people. The county seat was moved to Santa Angela. In 1883, the town's name was officially changed to San Angelo by the United States Post Office.

The Concho River has three primary feeds: the North, Middle, and South Concho Rivers. The North Concho River is the longest fork, starting in Howard County and traveling southeast for 88 mi (142 km) until merging with the South and Middle forks near Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas.
Fort Concho is a former United States Army installation and National Historic Landmark District located in San Angelo, Texas.It was established in November 1867 at the confluence of the North and South Concho Rivers, on the routes of the Butterfield Overland Mail Route and Goodnight–Loving Trail, and was an active military base for the next 22 years.
The land surrounding it, which now makes up the area of the park, was leased to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and opened as San Angelo State Park in 1995. Native Americans, according to archeological findings, had lived in the area for 18,000 years starting with Paleo-American hunters of giant Ice Age mammals.
San Angelo, Texas Twin Buttes Reservoir is an artificial lake located about 6 mi (9.7 km) southwest of the city of San Angelo , Texas , and immediately upstream from Lake Nasworthy . Construction on Twin Buttes Dam to form the reservoir was completed in 1963.
