I don't know why the QR code feature would not work on an iPhone 6S. I do see it on my iPhone 7. Something you can try though is to just enter the url for the FFT version of canvas which is canvas.instructure.com. I just tried that on mine and it brings up a login page, but I don't have a FFT account so I couldn't test that aspect of it.
