John Deere 40. The John Deere Model M tractor was a two-cylinder row-crop tractor produced by John Deere from 1947 to 1952, with successor models produced until 1960. It was succeeded by the updated 40, 420 and 430 models, as well as the 320 and 330 models that occupied the market positions left vacant by the more powerful 400 series models.
Late 1938 models were restyled in line with other Deere tractors, with Henry Dreyfuss cowlings and grilles. In 1940. the 14-horsepower (10 kW) LA was introduced, using a John Deere engine, and the L received a Deere engine in lieu of the Hercules. The LA introduced a power take-off to the L line. Both the L and LA were produced at the same time.
Deere & Company's GM model was introduced in 1942, and was made until 1947. Engine power was increased to 38 hp (28 kW), and a new six-speed transmission was also added. The G model got a restyled front at this point, as did the other John Deere tractors models. The GM had electric start and lights added to its options.
