[ 2] De Jussieu recognized the Orchidaceae as a separate family in his Genera Plantarum in 1789. [ 3] Olof Swartz recognized 25 genera in 1800. [ 4]

From a cladistic point of view, the orchid family is considered to be monophyletic , i.e. the group incorporates all the taxa derived from an ancestral group.
Description. Platanthera clavellata plants are 4-16" tall. It is one of the smallest species out of the 32 species of Platanthera common in North America. [ 2] The stem has several leaves attached of which all but the bottom-most one are greatly reduced in size. There are no branches and the stem terminates in a raceme of 5-20 flowers.
