VA disability ratings represent the degree of impairment or disability a veteran experiences as a result of service-connected injuries or illnesses. The ratings are assigned on a scale from 0% to 100% in increments of 10%, with higher ratings indicating a more severe disability.
This rating enables the VA to assign a rating that accounts for the combined effects of multiple disabilities without exceeding 100 percent. A veteran’s combined disability rating is not simply the sum of their ratings for each condition. Instead, the VA uses a combined ratings table.
If VA finds that a Veteran has multiple disabilities, VA uses the Combined Ratings Table below to calculate a combined disability rating. Disability ratings are not additive, meaning that if a Veteran has one disability rated 60% and a second disability 20%, the combined rating is not 80%.
For example, if a veteran has three disabilities: one disability rated at 40%, one at 30%, and another at 20%, the combined disability rating is roughly: 40% + 15% + 10% = 65%. That gets rounded up, so the final rating is 70%. You can use the combined rating table on VA.gov for a more precise calculation.
