Windows XP. Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is an edition of Windows XP for x86-64 personal computers. It was released on April 25, 2005, around the same time as with the x86-64 versions of Windows Server 2003. It is designed to use the expanded 64-bit memory address space provided by the x86-64 architecture.
The first, Windows XP 64-Bit Edition, was intended for IA-64 systems; as IA-64 usage declined on workstations in favor of AMD's x86-64 architecture, the Itanium edition was discontinued in January 2005. A new 64-bit edition supporting the x86-64 architecture, called Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, was released in April 2005.
