Hurricane Hugo hit Charlotte and then went up to the mountains and caused a lot of flooding and damage there. Hurricane Hazel hit Fayetteville and Raleigh and then went north — effects were felt as far north as Toronto! Hurricane Fran hit Raleigh. Everywhere in the state is fair game for tornadoes.

It might seem counter intuitive, but flooding isn't just about proximity to the water. Many places in Summerville flooded during the 2015 October rains. My house on James Island is across the street from deep water but up on a bluff so flooding has never come close including the 2015 rains, hurricane Hugo and every other "water event".

  7. Best Coastal Cities in SC/NC, Low hurricane risks? (Columbia:...

    www.city-data.com/forum/south-carolina/570440-best-coastal-cities-sc-nc-low.html

Summerville is about 30 miles inland so the wind damage wouldn't be quite as bad as on the immediate coast. Columbia is 100 miles inland and in the 3 years I've lived here, we've never had extreme damage from a hurricane. Hugo was the worst we've had here and we only suffered some downed trees; nothing terrible.
