Tuning machines (with spiral metal worm gears) are mounted on the back of the headstock on the bass guitar neck. The standard design for the electric bass guitar has four strings, tuned E, A, D and G, in fourths such that the open highest string, G, is an eleventh (an octave and a fourth) below middle C, making the tuning of all four strings the same as that of the double bass (E 1 –A 1 –D ...

The Fender VI was released in 1961 and followed the concept of the Danelectro six-string bass released in 1956, having six strings tuned E1 to E3, an octave below the Spanish guitar. The Bass VI was closely related to the Fender Jaguar, with which it shared styling and technical details, notably the Fender floating tremolo.
A later tuning was BEADGBE, following standard seven-string-guitar tuning (EADGBE plus a low B). He later narrowed the neck down to convert it to a six-string instrument, tuned EADGBE. In 1995, luthier Bill Conklin made a nine-string bass for Bill "Buddha" Dickens, and in 1999 luthier Alfonso Iturra made an eight-string bass for Igor Saavedra.
The Fender VI, a 6 string bass, was tuned one octave lower than standard guitar tuning. It was released in 1961, and was briefly favored by Jack Bruce of Cream. [30] Gibson introduced its short-scale 30.5-inch (775 mm) EB-3 in 1961, also used by Bruce. [31]
