Every Wednesday we will discuss an album from our Essential Albums list. Beginning with our classic list, we'll be moving chronologically to modern times. Last week's EAOTW: Outkast -Speakerboxx/The Love Below. Album: Jay-Z - The Black Album (Roc-A-Fella) Stream/Purchase. Spotify.
The album was like Jay Z putting himself in the HOF. At the time he did not have the catalog to call himself the G. O. A. T but this album and the albums after his "retirement" put him in that discussion. Omg 20 years already ! Dirt off your shoulder is arguably the best and most influential instrumental of the 2000s.
The Black Album is not his best work Might not be his "best" (given the existence of Reasonable Doubt and the Blueprint) but it's damn near close. Threat with a legendary 9th Wonder beat, 99 Problems, Dirt Off Your Shoulder, and my personal favorite Jay-Z song, Public Service Announcement (also the best Just Blaze beat of all time, imo).
The Black Album to me this is Jay’s hardest album, every track is a banger and this is equally the best produced Jay album with the blueprint, it is also the most entertaining. 4:44 this is where we disagree the most, although I stand by this placement. 4:44 shows Jay at his most mature and thoughtful, the lyricism is even with Reasonable ...
The instrumentals have aged the best out of any Jay album that came out then. Jay was also witty, had bars, cadence was remarkable, and the Renegade song is probably top 50 most iconic or spoke about songs in hip hop history. Album cover was legendary and captured how Jay was comin on the album.
Mick Boogie & Terry Urban - Viva La Hova - Highly acclaimed tape that takes Jay-Z acapellas and puts them over Coldplay tracks. Features production by 9th Wonder and Cookin' Soul among others. Cookin' Soul - New York State of Mind Vol. 1 Amazingly lush production by these guys as always.
The Black Album 4:44 Vol 1 The Dynasty The Blueprint 3 Vol 2 Vol 3 The Blueprint 2. Kingdom Come MCHG I feel good about the top 4 or 5 and the bottom 3 but the middle i could go rearrange in pretty much any order and id be fine with that. RD/AG/BP/BA are jay-zs best works by a mile
Whatever order you wanna put these Idc, Jay has so many classics and should definitely be considered in the top 5 goat conversations. For the time black album came out, it was a monumental moment, considering it was his “Final album” bought that CD and “Beg for mercy” by G-Unit the same day, what a time to be alive.
Holy Grail / 8. The Blueprint 2 / 7.5. 4:44 / 7.5. Kingdom Come / 7. Everything is Love / 7. Best of Both Worlds / 6. Unfinished Business / 3. A few controversial picks, Black Album is one of the greatest all time albums to me, Dynast and Blueprint 3 are his most underrated. 4:44 is the most overrated. Reply reply.
