Now I know why, because high pressure sales tactics only work when both of the marks, er, I mean customers, are in the room to be subjected to the pitch. Not a bad scam. And they don't even sell real Andersen windows. Right now Marvin Ultimate Clad and the Andersen 400 are 1-2 in Consumer Reports and have sterling reputations.
We were also looking at the Architectural A series from Andersen and now Marvin Integrity. I am leaning towards the Integrity windows in part due to my impression with their construction and performance, and in part because they also have a local dealer with a long history of carrying and supporting Marvin windows, good reviews, is a family ...
Andersen's Low-E4 and Marvin's LowE-2 are the same coating, Cardinal's LoE2-272, which is a moderate solar gain coating. Edit - Heatlock is Andersen’s name for i89 surface 4 coating. Low-E4, as Andersen uses it, is not referring to i89 surface 4 coating, in any way, unless it’s specifically called Low-E4 with Heatlock.
Everyone loves Andersen, hates not the price. I replaced a few windows 5 years back with Simonton windows, and will be tearing them out as well. They were all crap. Bad batch, dont know. I am planning on doing the siding at hte same time, so I figured I would rewrap the house and install new construction windows vs the replacements.
There was some wood rot. The major cost to the front of the house is that I have a huge half-circle in the master bedroom sitting above three casement windows (two open.) Both Andersen and Marvin priced that window alone at about $6,500. Also, the Marvin dealer offered a lower quote for the back windows compared to Andersen.
Just to close the loop, we decided to go with the Andersen 400 series. Marvin was almost exactly 50% higher in price compared to the Andersen 400, and we figured there are plenty of other areas in our remodel that we could spend the difference on. After looking closely at the A400 windows and doors, pretty happy overall with our choice.
At that time, Marvin was more expensive than Andersen, but since then, Marvin has come down in price to be competitively priced. Marvin was rated slightly better in durability at that time too. I checked the current U-Factor for Marvin Ultimate Casements and it is listed as 0.30. Andersen's U-Factor is listed as 0.28 for their casements.
Builders are going with Marvin essential for windows. While researching for energy efficiency came across this forum and windows Alpen & Inline. Been reading a bit about the two – Would really appreciate if you can guide me here. Requirement: Lots of tall windows (max 8 feet), Casement, Narrow frame (more visible glass), good energy efficiency
Marvin vs. Andersen Windows: The Eternal Struggle Questions on how we spend our money and our time - consumer goods and services, home and vehicle, leisure and recreational activities 65 posts
Windows I would dearly love to see a graph of "U" vs. price for Energy Star windows. The lowest I have seen for a "U" value is about 0.123 = R 8.1; we bought regular Kolbe windows with U=.26 or R 3.85. Considering that the total for our windows was about $16K -- and that was with wood interiors, etc., I don't see the value.
