Optifine's closed source mindset means it's slow to update, impossible to fix by the community, doesn't play nice with the other children, and doesn't even provide any options for people to tweak their experience or performance (especially when it has some of the most bass-ackwards culling logic compared to other mods).

Slower startup time. In Vanilla this isn't much of an issue, but in modded environments (yes, even 1.12.2 and 1.7.10) OptiFine tends to increase game loading time. OptiFine takes really long to update to newer versions of Minecraft compared to Fabric optimization mods (and even their Forge ports).

Also: The only thing I kinda miss is the zoom from OptiFine There is a mod called Zoomify, it has a setting which mimics OptiFine's zoom 1:1 (+ a lor more optional settings, like zoom scrolling) and my cape. The Capes mod adds support for those.
Does OptiFine work with Dawncraft or is it just the modpack? Problem. It says recommend 8-10GB and the minimum is 6GB. I have 8 and it runs so badly. Like I can get up to 130 or something fps but once I move it goes straight to 30, then jumps to like 30, and then back to 20.
For pure fps, yeah sodium is better. If you're playing vanilla, optifine gives you a good fps boost as well as features that can only mostly be replicated with fabric mods. In terms of performance, Sodium & co. are a lot better than OptiFine, that's for sure. However, in terms of features, it's not quite there yet.

first step make sure the extension is a .jar file. then second step is to select the .jar file and right click on the .jar file, then right click and hover over open with, then after that click Java (Tm) Platform Se Binary. try to see what happens now. you can also just use it as a forge mod too.
Optifine's smooth grass, for example, which in my experience works automatically with every grass variant from any mod and using any resource pack. Without optifine the only solution is to use a resource pack to replace the grass side texture with the grass top, which also leaves something to be desired but at least looks a bit nicer.
