There is a tiny bit of coding and troubleshooting involved. Mainly making an ssl connection to the Remarkable tablet. Then, you'll have to install stuff through a command line interface. If you're looking to install custom applications to your remarkable, I'd recommend using Toltec. With this, you can then install your app launcher of choice.
I own a Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra and a Remarkable 2. For notes, writing, and all the non-colouring stages of drawing I prefer the Remarkable. Battery life: the Remarkable runs for ages on a single charge. It doesn't run out of battery by sitting unused for a day. Eye strain: e-ink is so much easier on the eyes.

I have an iPad Pro 12.9 inch, and have just bought the reMarkable 2 (I've had it for a week) with the Beta 3.0 software installed. The new software in my view, so far, really improves things. On my iPad I've used mainly Goodnotes for note-taking and annotating research papers, articles, etc. I also use the Concepts5 app on iPad for mindmapping ...
Usable for b/w scans (drawings or text) but not pictures. Drawj2d is a free java program for line drawings. Usage example (for more advanced use cases have a look at the manual): echo image diagram.png | drawj2d -Trmn. It will generate a notebook out.rmn that can be uploaded to the device using the reMarkable Connection Utility RCU.
